The disease, which affects up to a tenth of women of reproductive age to varying degrees, is still relatively unknown to the public. It can cause serious health complications, including infertility. But early diagnosis and treatment can help many women. March has become Endometriosis Awareness Month worldwide.
In endometriosis, endometrial-like tissue (the lining of the uterus) settles in the body and responds to estrogen. These deposits are called endometriosis deposits and can occur in the ovaries, fallopian tubes, tissue around the uterus, but also in the kidneys, intestines, and even, exceptionally, in the lungs, brain and other organs. This disease affects about 10 to 15% of women of childbearing age.
The different faces of endometriosis
Diagnosis of endometriosis is not easy. It can be accompanied by pain in the lower abdomen, painful or too strong or irregular menstruation, pain during sex, but also pain not related to the cycle or intercourse (for example, when urinating or defecating), fatigue and exhaustion, headaches, weaker immunity. However, it is also not uncommon for the disease to be completely painless and almost symptomless. Although research into endometriosis has made considerable progress over the last few decades, the origin and development of the disease has still not been fully clarified. At our IVF clinic we have a specialist in the treatment of infertility with endometriosis — Dr. Libičová, who has already helped many women to fulfill their dream of motherhood.
Living with endometriosis
Current medicine assumes that various factors are behind the emergence of this diagnosis. For example, genetics or heredity, hormonal imbalance or retrograde menstruation may play a role. More than half of women suffering from endometriosis experience some of the symptoms mentioned above. While for some women, even minor deposits of endometriosis can cause severe symptoms and significantly reduce their quality of life, others may not be aware of it at all. In some cases, the deposits will disappear on their own, while in others they may grow larger or lead to the formation of adhesions and cysts. These can impair fertility. An estimated 30 – 50% of women with endometriosis suffer from infertility.

Diagnostika a léčba
The correct diagnosis is often not made until 7 to 10 years later. Why? For one thing, a routine gynaecological examination usually fails to detect this disease, and at the same time, endometriosis is almost unknown to the public in our country. Therefore, women do not think of discussing with doctors the suspicion of this diagnosis. Moreover, menstrual pain and other types of pain associated with women’s reproductive health are unfortunately rather downplayed in our society. In order to raise awareness and promote general awareness of endometriosis in our country, the patient organisation ENDO Talks has been set up to address this issue.
There is currently no single treatment for endometriosis. It depends on the severity of the disease, the age and physical condition of the patient and other factors. One of the treatment methods is laparoscopic removal of endometriosis deposits, cysts and adhesions. Available studies show that such a procedure can increase the chances of natural pregnancy. Other options include the use of medications, hormone therapy and artificial insemination.
